福井県坂井市の観光ガイドによれば 「東尋坊」は、越前加賀海岸国定公園にある国の天然記念物。巨大な柱状の岩（柱状節理）が織り成す、約１kmにわたり海岸線に広がる豪快な景観が特徴です。 これだけ大規模なデイサイト（近年の調査研究により）の柱状節理は世界的に珍しく、朝鮮半島の金剛山・スカンジナビアのノルウェー西海岸と並ぶ、地質学的に大変貴重な場所です。 岩肌は、一見やわらかく見えますが、溶岩が冷え固まったときにできたといわれる柱状の岩は非常に硬く、東尋坊の景観は、この岩々が日本海の荒波に耐え、長い年月をかけて作り上げた芸術品ともいえるものです。
“Tojinbo” is a national natural monument located in Echizen Kaga Kaigan Quasi-National Park. It is characterized by a dynamic landscape that spreads along the coastline for about 1 km, woven by huge columnar rocks (columnar joints). Columnar joints of such a large dacite (according to recent survey research) are rare in the world, and are geologically very valuable places along with Mt. Kumgang on the Korean Peninsula and the western coast of Norway in Scandinavia. The rock surface looks soft at first glance, but the columnar rocks that are said to have formed when lava cooled and hardened are extremely hard. It can also be called a work of art.
